Marungay / Moringa / Kalamunggay

Posted on January 20, 2020

Marungay is an excellent growing choice if you have lots of room and are very hungry. The tree grows prolifically; the bean pods and the leaves are edible and highly nutritious.

Seriously though, the plant is really a true miracle. Popular in India, the Philippines and Indonesia, it has been introduced worldwide, often as a solution to food production. The plant has itself has water refining qualities and the foliage is high in vitamins A, B, C and K with high amounts of manganese and protein as well. From my own perspective, the greens taste great in soup.

The tree can be propagated through cuttings or by seed. Thanks to my farm neighbor, our plant exchange occasionally has “volunteers” to give away. My friend grows her tree in a large pot, so container growing is also an option.
