Kukui Nut Tree (Candlenut)

Posted on October 7, 2019

The kukui nut tree, also known as candlenut, grows to a height of 25 to 75 feet, with wide spreading or pendulous branches. The leaves are pale green, simple, and ovate, or trilobed or rarely five-lobed, with an acute apex, 10–20 cm (3.9–7.9 in) long. The nut is round, about an inch in diameter and is used in inamona seasoning.

The Kukui is the State Tree, although it was originally brought here from other parts of Polynesia. The waxy nuts are used for making oil, as well as lei.
