It’s amazing what shows up at these exchanges. This month, a kind donor from the Kaneohe side brought us a HUGE box of vanilla vine cuttings. These are hard to come by and typically quite expensive. She brought so many that we actually had a few pieces left all the way to the end of the exchange.
For those planning to come, we hold these plant swaps on the Third Saturday of every month from 10am to 1pm right in front of Assagios and the waterfront at Koko Marina. It’s all in conjunction with 808 Craft and Gift Fairs, so if you visit there will be many booths to visit and lots of good old local kine fun.
Our policy is like that of a potluck. Bring something, take something. If you don’t have anything to give, no worries. Pay it forward by doing a good deed for another neighbor or bring extra plants the next time you come and visit. Be courteous, just like you would at a potluck. So, don’t be the guy who only shows up with boxes to take home plants. (Yeah, you know da guy — he’s probably a relative or something. Anyhow, no be THAT guy!) We have a donation jar. Here’s the story behind that. (There’s also a story behind that story — about what happens when the PTSA at Kaiser HS changes leadership. I’ve blogged about that too, but you can do your own search for the link.) Short story: we don’t expect monetary donations. We prefer a community that builds positive momentum in its deeds. If you leave a monetary donation, we will put it to good use and donate the remainder to future generations through our schools.
For June, I have some green eggplant seedlings and cinnamon basil going. I’ll also have some spider plant and mint going too. We’re definitely going to need the community to bring donations, just like they did this month. In June, Santa G will be recuperating so those beautiful (and plentiful) starters will have to wait until July. (Get well soon, Santa G, we’re all cheering you on.)
Once again, thank you to everyone that makes this happen, 808 Ladybugs, my BFF Nell, Ray, Santa & Mrs. G, Bert, Pauline, and the list goes on and on.
