It’s been a tough few months, but I’m back to rebuilding my quail flock

Posted on March 23, 2025

I caught three mongoose. I killed two mongoose. It wasn’t fun. I resorted to a pellet gun.

I would have killed three mongoose, but one ran away when the trap door failed. These buggahs are awful. They squeeze their way into the quail cages, literally becoming like liquid to break in. Once inside, they ravage the birds, sometimes leaving scattered body parts, or eating just the insides. It makes me so sad I want to quit.

But, as seems to be a pattern, the world once again falls apart and the world needs to convince itself it could sustain. I’ve had to tell others that I don’t have birds to sell right now, but I’m working on it.

Here’s proof. I recently hatched some new coturnix quail and it looks like eleven will make it to adulthood — which is a mere six weeks from hatch.

All of this has been made more complicated by not having the time to devote to raising quail. During the pandemic, I had all the free time I needed. Now, not so much. However, it looks like I will be continuing to try.

To those looking to raise quail, be patient. I’ve asked a friend to take some of the requests and she’s been able to sell a few birds and some hatching eggs. We’re playing a bit of catch-up due to mongoose.
