It’s never easy to balance the need for information dissemination and the need for privacy. I’m sure that a number of blog followers know who Hawaii Kai Auntie is: my real name and often even where I live.
Many years ago, I had a Facebook account with my real name and lots of contacts. When the community started to resemble a middle school playground, I left. As it would later turn out, many of the conflicts were intended: a dark social experiment via Mark Zukerberg et.al. intended to build clicks, responses and ultimately, revenue. I now have a Facebook account under an (unallowed) pseudonym where I post only what is necessary and read only what (unfortunately) schools and other civic organizations won’t post elsewhere.
It’s a balance that needs to be maintained. Auntie does not have a TikTok, nor does she dance wildly to the latest challenge. She does have a Twitter account, which she thinks will inevitably fail to exist by 2023. Right now, I’m making the transition to Mastodon, a group of independent servers that speak to one another on the same software platform. That’s more technical detail than many of us need. All you really need to know is that it’s like Twitter and while it may take a bit of time to learn where things are on your webpage or mobile phone, it functions similarly.
